The Army late last year issued a Request for Information looking for proposals to lease underutilized land on installations for mineral processing facilities. Using the Enhanced Use Lease program, the land will be available for long-term development for fair market value, according to an Army story.
The development will provide revenue for the installations, bolster the local economy, and support industry through increasing mineral processing capacity.
“The Army is committed to driving the nation forward on critical mineral and supply chains,” Principal Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment Dr. Jeff Waksman said. “Partnering with industry, we look to leverage Army’s capabilities and authorities to expedite a reshoring of critical mineral mining and processing.”
