New guidance released on Monday gives installation commanders more say in responding to drone threats by classifying all unauthorized drone flights as surveillance threats, Military Times reported. The guidance establishes clear standards for responding to unmanned threats. 

The updated policy includes designating increased area around an installation under commander control, clarified standards, and shared access to drone tracking services between government agencies. 

“Countering drones does not start and stop at the fence line,” said Brigadier General Matt Ross, Director of JIATF-401. “With this new guidance installation commanders are empowered to address threats as they develop, and the guidance makes clear that unauthorized drone flights are a surveillance threat even before they breach an installation perimeter.”
