A funding lapse for the Department of Homeland Security, which includes the Coast Guard, could have “severe and lasting challenges for the Coast Guard’s workforce, operational readiness and long-term capabilities,” Acting Vice Commandant Vice Adm. Thomas Allan told lawmakers Wednesday.
Allan said a shutdown of just a few days could delay paychecks for Coast Guard members.
“Shutdowns cripple morale and directly harm our ability to recruit and retain the talented Americans we need to meet growing demands,” he said in opening remarks to the House Appropriations Committee on the impact of a potential shutdown.
A lapse in DHS funding seems increasingly likely as the White House and Democrats try to negotiate immigration enforcement changes that Democrats want before extending DHS funding. It is set to expire Friday night.
