The Coast Guard announced plans to modernize Coast Guard Base Seattle, preparing it to host the future Polar Security Cutter icebreakers. The $323 million investment increases funding from an initial $137 million contract given to The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, USNI News reported.
The importance of arctic operations has increased production of icebreaker ships under the Trump administration. Three Arctic Security Cutters and new icebreakers were funded in last year’s reconciliation bill in the amount of $5 billion. All are expected to be home ported at Coast Guard Base Seattle.
