DHS Shutdown Set to Start Tonight, End Date Uncertain

February 13, 2026

The Senate failed to reach a deal yesterday to fund the Department of Homeland Security even on a short-term basis, meaning funding will begin to lapse for many DHS programs starting tonight. Senate Democrats and the White House were unable to reach an agreement on immigration enforcement reforms.

The House and Senate are now on a scheduled recess.

Coast Guard Acting Vice Commandant Vice Adm. Thomas Allan said this week a shutdown could mean Coast Guard members will soon go without pay, as On Base reported.

But Politico reported the branch can likely tap reserve funds to pay active duty members “for several months.” The report said the Coast Guard “could have to halt some work including family support services and efforts to buy new cutters.”
