Missouri Base to Demolish WWII-Era Barracks

Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri has scheduled the destruction of 10 WWII-era barracks that have been deemed too expensive to overhaul from their current state, according to an Army report. The barracks were built in 1941 as temporary buildings but continued to house soldiers until 1981 when they were converted to museum space.

“We absolutely understand that these buildings hold a special place in our history and that many in our community, including me, will be sad to see them go,” Department of Public Works Director Mark Lenox said. “It’s a difficult but necessary decision. Our primary responsibility is to the Army’s mission.”

New York Base Hosts Sewing Class

Fort Drum, New York now hosts a sewing class at the base’s family resource center, an Army story covered. As a part of the relocation readiness program, the “stitch the standard” class teaches attendees how to repair their uniforms and update patches. The skills taught at the hands-on class provide valuable life skills to help soldiers stay self-sufficient.
