President Trump said Thursday he will nominate Senate Armed Services Committee member Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) to replace Kristi Noem as Homeland Security secretary. Trump announced in the same Truth Social post that he was dismissing Noem from DHS and creating a new national security role for her.
Until the Senate approves a new secretary, Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar, a Navy veteran, will manage the department, as Fox News reported.
The DHS partial shutdown continues with no end in sight, as Coast Guard members and other essential personnel continue working without pay.
Senate Democrats Thursday again blocked a vote on funding DHS, continuing to insist on immigration enforcement reforms.
“We’re still far apart, but we’re still negotiating,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said, according to The Hill.
