Air Force Restricts SkillBridge Program

April 15, 2026

The Air and Space Force will limit the time officers can utilize the Defense Department’s SkillBridge program based on rank, according to a Stars and Stripes story.

The SkillBridge program allows active-duty service members to gain civilian work experience in their last six months before they leave the military, preparing them for the job market. The new Air Force guidelines limit the participation to a maximum of four months, with less time available for senior officers.

The Air Force says the policy was updated to maintain operational readiness, since positions aren’t filled while the program is utilized. The Army similarly limited the program last year, citing the same concerns.
