Coast Guard Civilians Go Unpaid as DHS Funding Lapse Drags On

April 1, 2026

Civilians and contractors reporting to work for the Coast Guard continue to work without pay as Congress and the administration continue a standoff on funding the Department of Homeland Security. Most Coast Guard members are being paid through DHS funding from the “big beautiful bill,” as CNN reported.

The shutdown started Feb. 14, and “people are thinking this will go into the summer,” an administration official told Politico.

Democrats and the White House are at a standstill in talks over immigration enforcement reform, while Republican leaders in the House and Senate have different approaches to funding the department.
