House Republicans will reconsider a bill they voted down last week to fund the Coast Guard and most other parts of the Department of Homeland Security through Sept. 30 after reaching an agreement Wednesday with their Senate counterparts, The New York Times reported.
Republicans plan to pursue a budget reconciliation package to fund DHS’s immigration enforcement activities without reforms that Democrats have sought.
“In following this two-track approach, the Republican Congress will fully reopen the department, make sure all federal workers are paid, and specifically fund immigration enforcement and border security for the next three years so that those law-enforcement activities can continue uninhibited,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Wednesday afternoon in a joint statement.
While lawmakers are on recess for Easter and Passover, both chambers have pro forma sessions scheduled and could advance a spending bill as soon as today.
