As the House considers whether to pass a Senate-approved funding plan for the Department of Homeland Security, President Trump said Thursday he would sign an order to pay all DHS employees, including Coast Guard personnel.
“[H]elp is on the way for our Brave and Patriotic Public Servants who have continued to work hard, and do their part to protect and defend our Country,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
It’s similar to an order he used last week to pay TSA workers. But it was not immediately clear how the order would be implemented and whether it’s constitutional to spend money Congress hasn’t appropriated.
House leaders said they are unlikely to call members back from their planned spring recess to consider the Senate-passed bill, which funds all of DHS except for immigration enforcement, AP reported. That means the House would not act until April 14 at the earliest.
