War Secretary Pete Hegseth asked Army Chief of Staff Randy George to step down from the role and take immediate retirement, according to Thursday evening media reports.
“We are grateful for his service, but it was time for a leadership change in the Army,” a senior Pentagon official told CBS News.
George’s term was not up until next year.
Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve will be acting Army chief of staff.
He is “a battle-tested leader with decades of operational experience and is completely trusted by Secretary Hegseth to carry out the vision of this administration without fault,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said, according to CBS.
