Wisconsin Training Ground Performs Prescribed Burn
Fort McCoy, Wisconsin performed a prescribed burn at its training lands, according to an Army report. The procedure removes dead, dry plant waste, ensuring that uncontrolled wildfires are much less likely and encouraging new growth.
“The regrowth after a prescribed burn is highly preferred by wildlife,” Fort McCoy’s wildlife biologist Kevin Luepke said. “You get nectar-producing plants that butterflies depend on, grasses and forbs that provide nesting cover for birds, and tender woody vegetation that deer use for browse.”
