Washington Base Partners with Tribe for Honor Walk
Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington partnered with the local Nisqually Indian Tribe to partake in an Honor Walk along sacred sites. According to an Army report, the event brought in 105 participants from the tribe and base, strengthening ties between the neighboring communities.
“This isn’t just about looking back in the past and honoring the legacy of […] the Nisqually people,” Garrison Commander Col. Joseph Handke said. “It’s about looking to the future as well, about strengthening and respect for our partnership going forward.”
Great Lakes to Implement Autonomous Monitor Drones
The Coast Guard Great Lakes District will be deploying autonomous, solar and wind-powered drones to help monitor the water for climate data and illicit activity. According to a Coast Guard press release, the drones will be piloted by artificial intelligence and monitored by human operators. The drones will help identify when vessels are in distress and speed up the rate at which Coast Guard crews can respond.
