The Navy is considering adapting the USS Gerald R. Ford to provide nuclear power to power grids where it is docked. This capability would help support installations and civilian infrastructure in emergency scenarios, Interesting Engineering reported.
The change would take extensive modifications but would give installations energy redundance while the carrier is docked. The Navy has yet to announce a timeline for when testing would occur, as it could potentially leave a vital Naval asset out of commission for an extended period.
