Amid increasing tensions between Canada and the Trump administration, the Pentagon announced that it will suspend participation on the Permanent Joint Board on Defense, The Hill reported. The board was established in 1940 and brings together defense leaders from each country to discuss strategy.
“Unfortunately, Canada has failed to make credible progress on its defense commitments. DOW is pausing the Permanent Joint Board on Defense to reassess how this forum benefits shared North American defense,” Elbridge Colby, undersecretary of war for policy, said.
The shift in relations comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke at the World Economic Forum in January and denounce economic reliance on the U.S. Canada has additionally been reconsidering the breadth of its military purchasing from the US., though no decisions have been made.
