The United States paid $17 million to families impacted by contamination from the nearby Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, as part of a settlement between the Navy and Hawaiian civilians. 

The facility had a jet fuel spill in November 2021, contaminating groundwater and harming families in the vicinity. Two lawsuits regarding the spill’s cleanup make up the $17 million settlement. 

The settlement will be distributed as payments to 629 out of the 3,600 families whose water was provided by the Navy, Military Times reported. Service members have not received any payments, as they are waiting for an appeal in the Ninth Circuit.
