Air Force Creates New Role for Aerial Base Defense

July 6, 2026

The Air Force is creating a new specialty for aerial defense from missile and drone attacks at installations. The move comes in response to the threats being faced in Operation Epic Fury, Air & Space Forces Magazine reported.

Unmanned aircraft usage in warfare has made counter-drone defense a priority abroad and domestically. Airmen in the new role will be specially trained to address aerial attacks.

“Nuclear deterrence and cyber are some of the biggest threats that we face, but defending our air bases, not only overseas but in the homeland, has become an increasingly high priority,” Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said in May 20 congressional testimony. “We are focusing on electronic warfare to directed energy to kinetic capabilities to defend our airmen and guardians.”

Drone production and defense will be a hot topic at the upcoming Installation Innovation Forum.
