Defense Innovation Unit Opens Search for New Outposts

July 14, 2026
The Defense Innovation Unit released guidelines for the potential home of eight new Defense Innovation OnRamp Hubs. The released criteria focus on various factors that impact their decision, according to Inside Defense

A few of the mentioned categories are:

  • Ecosystem strength (measured using EDA Innovation Intelligence Index)
  • Proximity to private sector technology ecosystems with relevance to DoW modernization priorities
  • Workforce and talent pool availability
  • Community support
  • Potential for public-private collaboration
  • Alignment with administration and national security guidance
  • Existing U.S. military presence
  • Veteran community strength by population

“As local front doors, our OnRamp Hubs help advance DIU’s nationwide effort to catalyze the defense technology ecosystem by providing streamlined local access for funders, founders and talent,” the department said in a press release.

Conversations about Defense Innovation Hubs will continue at the upcoming Installation Innovation Forum.
