Building one community: Why Defense cOMMUNITIES ARE CRITICAL TO OUR MILITARY AND MILITARY FAMILIES
If there was ever a question regarding the important role communities play in supporting our military, this last year showed that the role is vital. From helping families who needed emergency food support to ensuring the virus didn’t impact our military focus on mission, America’s Defense Communities responded in force, even when faced with unprecedented challenges.
This is nothing new. No matter the challenge, our communities are ready to stand up and do what it takes to support our service members and their families. On and off base, military or civilian, we are one community and that idea has a powerful impact every day.
ADC’s annual magazine will continue to tell the stories of America’s Defense Communities and the individuals whose good work makes a difference in lives of our military families. This year’s issues will take a comprehensive look at the critical role of defense communities in their everyday work, through this extraordinary year and moving forward, including stories on:
- The strategic role of defense communities in planning for climate change
- How this year’s Great American Defense Communities are meeting local needs
- Partnership and engagement best practices from around the country
- Stories of everyday defense community heroes
- How defense communities responded to the COVID-19 pandemic

We Are Looking for Defense Community Champions
This year’s special issue of America’s Defense Communities magazine will be feature profiles of defense community champions who made a difference during this challenging period. These are the individuals in defense communities who are making a difference through acts big and small, who inspire others, and are creating opportunities to support the men and women who protect our nation every day.
