Rogers, Calvert, McFaul to Support Jordan for Speaker

October 17, 2023

House Republican leaders plan a floor vote at noon Eastern time to select a new Speaker. It’s unclear this morning whether Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has the support he needs to win the gavel.

House Armed Services Committee Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) and Defense Appropriations Subcommittee Chair Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) announced early Monday they would support Jordan, after initially being against his nomination as speaker.

“@Jim_Jordan and I have had two cordial, thoughtful, and productive conversations over the past two days,” Rogers posted on X. “We agreed on the need for Congress to pass a strong NDAA, appropriations to fund our government’s vital functions and other important legislation like the Farm Bill.”

Rogers had floated the idea last week of working with Democrats to elect a speaker, as On Base reported.

Calvert posted on X Monday that he made his decision after “a conversation with Jim Jordan about how we must get the House back on a path to achieve our national security and appropriations goals. Let’s get to work.”

Foreign Affairs Committee Chair Michael McCaul (R-Texas) is also supporting Jordan. McCaul told CNN this morning he has been “assured” that Jordan would advance an Israel support package that’s linked to continued support for Ukraine.
