Contractors May Get Shutdown Backpay

January 31, 2019

Members of the House and Senate are pushing legislation to allow some government contractors to get backpay for work missed during the 35-day partial government shutdown, according to Federal Times. Federal employees are already receiving backpay.
“It’s just commonsense that the contractors who work side-by-side with all of us deserve back pay, too,” Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) said. “Federal contractors have never been made whole in any shutdown, including this one, and that needs to change.”
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) said legislation isn’t needed because the Office of Management and Budget can use existing rules to authorize backpay.
