Military Medical Facilities to Resume Elective Procedures

May 21, 2020

The Pentagon announced the “Resumption of Elective Surgery” in a recent press release after a nearly two-month postponement which started on March 24.

The initial deferment of all elective surgeries and procedures was to “to conserve personal protective equipment, optimize available medical staff for response to COVID-19 patient care requirements, and protect patients.”

The updated policy is alignment with department’s health protection condition (HPCON) and the White House’s Opening Up America Again plan.

The policy stipulates that the commander or director at each Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) or Dental Treatment Facility (DTF) will make the determination when elective procedures will resume.
