Acting USAF Installations Chief to Communities: Bring Us Your Partnership Ideas

April 8, 2021

The Air Force is always looking to its installations and its community partners to identify best operational practices that can be replicated at other installations, Jennifer Miller, the acting assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and energy, said Thursday on ADC Live.

“If there’s things that are working that could be done better by a county through an intergovernment support agreement with us, please come to us with those things, because we certainly are not the generator,” Miller told ADC CEO Tim Ford. “We like to be the consumer of the good ideas that communities have.”

Miller said that includes ideas on how to support Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s focus on mitigating the impact of climate change to installations and readiness.

“Any interruption in the entire mission chain, in energy resiliency or water resiliency, can result in our inability to perform our mission,” Miller said. “We need to rely on the local community, and we need to work with them.”

Miller also addressed concerns over the past few years at privatized housing in the Air Force and the other services. She said she personally briefs incoming wing commanders and their spouses about the DOD-wide priority of improving housing.

“We’re slowly bringing back up and winning the trust of our airmen and our families and our guardians now. But one thing we realize is that we can’t take our eye off the ball.”
