Congress Reauthorizes Small Business Innovation Grants

September 30, 2022

Congress passed legislation Thursday reauthorizing the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Technology Transfers (STTR) program through 2025. DOD is the primary user of the grants, as Breaking Defense noted.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) pushed for some tweaks to the program to curb potential abuse.

“We were able to reach a bipartisan deal that puts needed controls in place to secure America’s investment in research from China’s espionage and malign influence,” Paul told Breaking Defense. “The deal also starts to mitigate abuse by so-called SBIR mills, holding them accountable for the egregious amount of taxpayer dollars they have received.”
