Lawmakers Want More Climate Change Info from DOD

January 31, 2019

A recent DOD report outlining climate change threats to U.S. military installations is incomplete and should be revised by April, three Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee said in a letter to the Pentagon.
Committee Chair Adam Smith (D-Calif.) and two colleagues said the report did not fulfill the requirements set out in the congressional mandate ordering the study.
The study outlined near-term threats of climate change at many installations and painted a dire warning about the dangers that lurked around the middle of the century. But it did not include key information requested by Congress, such as a list of 10 installations from each service that are most vulnerable to climate change and specific mitigation plans, The Hill reported.
“It demonstrates a continued unwillingness to seriously recognize and address the threat that climate change poses to our national security and military readiness,” Smith said in a statement.
