HASC Floats Sites in Virginia, Alaska, New Mexico for Space Launches

The House Armed Services Committee’s draft National Defense Authorization Act raises concerns about whether Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida and Vandenberg Space Force Base, California can accommodate an expected growth in commercial and military space launches, as Defense News reported.

The vast majority of U.S. space launches take place at Cape Canaveral.

“The sharp increase in launches from this location has raised questions about how many launches the location can support without undue impact on the support services provided by the U.S. Space Force and the busy air corridor that passes through this region,” lawmakers wrote in a report accompanying the draft bill.

They said the National Security Space Launch should have alternative sites for launches starting in 2025. The bill specifically mentioned as potential sites Wallops Island in Virginia, Pacific Spaceport Complex in Alaska, and Spaceport America in New Mexico.
