Shutdown Update: ‘At Least We’re Talking’

January 24, 2019

The Senate Thursday rejected two competing proposals that would have re-opened the government, part of which has been shut down since Dec. 22, when many agencies’ funding ran out.
Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) proposed a three-week continuing resolution to allow more time to talk about border security, but the fate of that plan was murky late Thursday night after the White House said such a plan should include a “prorated down payment” for a border wall.
“That is not a reasonable agreement,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told reporters.
House Democrats plan to roll out a border security counter-proposal early Friday.
After the Senate votes failed Thursday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) huddled with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).
As he left the Capitol for the evening, McConnell told reporters, “At least we’re talking,” according to The Hill.
