Collins Says She’ll Vote against Emergency Declaration

February 20, 2019

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said Wednesday she would support a resolution opposing President Trump’s emergency declaration to divert military funds to build a southern border wall.
“We don’t know if the [Portsmouth Naval] shipyard will be affected, but it illustrates the danger of allowing unilateral action by the President that reverses what Congress and the President previously agreed to,” Collins said, according to WGME-TV.
Her remarks, which came during a ribbon-cutting at a Coast Guard command center in Portland, make her the first prominent Republican to support a resolution that is expected to start in the House next week. Even if it passes both chambers, it is unlikely to do so by a veto-proof majority, making it more likely the issue will play out in the courts.
Collins said she also supports a lawsuit that 16 states filed to stop the emergency order, according to the station.
