Senate Seems Poised to Disapprove of Wall Emergency

March 3, 2019

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) became the fourth senator to say he’ll back a House-passed resolution reversing President Trump’s declaration to use military construction funds to build a southern border wall.
“I can’t vote to give the President the power to spend money that hasn’t been appropriated by Congress,” Paul said Sunday, according to the Bowling Green Daily News. “We may want more money for border security, but Congress didn’t authorize it. If we take away those checks and balances, it’s a dangerous thing.”
Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) have said they will support the resolution when it comes to the Senate floor. If four Republicans join all Democrats, the resolution would pass in the Senate, but Congress does not seem to have the votes to override a promised veto.
