Army Defends Decision to End CH-47 Purchases

April 11, 2019

Top Army officials testifying before House defense appropriators earlier this week defended the service’s decision to stop purchasing CH-47 Chinook helicopters, Military.com reported.
Last year the Army pursued about $30 billion in budget savings to pay for the service’s modernization strategy over the next five years. The CH-47 cuts were among 186 cost savings ideas, Army Secretary Mark Esper told the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.
Chairman Pete Visclosky (D-Ind.), said he appreciated that the Army “has come in with 186 recommendations as far as reductions,” but said he is concerned that CH-47 Chinooks are on the list.
“I have heard from a number of people from a particular state that they are not happy with that particular change,” Visclosky said.
