Lawmakers proposed legislation Thursday that would cover VA treatment for veterans exposed to PFAS pollutants, which has been linked to cancer and other serious illnesses, AP reported.
Health officials have warned many veterans have been exposed to PFAS, which is a key component in firefighting foam used in training and emergency incidents. The toxins are also used widely as a water, stain and grease repellant.
In late March officials from DOD and EPA reassured lawmakers that their agencies are doing everything they can to address PFAS-contaminated water affecting installations and defense communities, On Base reported.
