Trump Administration Files Appeal to Texas Male-Only Draft Ruling

April 23, 2019

The Trump Administration filed an appeal Tuesday on a federal court ruling that found the Selective Service registration is unconstitutional, The Hill reported.
The administration’s move defends the current male-only draft policy that earlier this year a Southern Texas federal court ruled did not meet constitutional grounds, and in a court opinion said that it was time to “discuss the placement of women” in the military. The Texas court ruling did not mandate the Selective Service change its current registration.
The new Justice Department appeal argues that requiring female draft registration is “particularly problematic” and would ”impose draft registration on all eligible American women by judicial fiat before Congress has considered how to address the matter.”
The current Selective Service System requires that all men register within 30 days of their 18th birthday.
