Air Force Formally Announces Space Command Base Finalists

May 15, 2019

The Air Force officially announced Tuesday it has finalized its list of six locations for the prospective headquarters of a new U.S. Space Command, according to press release.
The official finalists include: Buckley Air Force Base, Colo.; Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base, Colo.; Peterson Air Force Base, Colo.; Redstone Arsenal, Ala.; Schriever Air Force Base, Colo.; and Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.
CNN reported the locations last month, but the Pentagon did not confirm the finalists until this week.
Next steps in the selection process will include conducting site surveys and analyzing each location to meet mission, capacity, environmental impact and cost criteria requirements, according to the Air Force.
Approval for a U.S. Space Command was authorized by Congress in 2018 and in December President Donald Trump ordered its formation.
