House Subcommittee Pegs $15 Million for Space Force, Far Below White House Request

May 20, 2019

The House Defense Appropriations subcommittee has allocated $15 million for the creation of a new military space force in its fiscal 2020 appropriations bill, Roll Call reported Monday.
If the House Appropriations Committee’s full $690.2 defense spending bill is approved this week, the proposed space force funding would be almost $57.5 million lower than the administration’s request, according to a committee report released Monday.
The Democrat-controlled House has been skeptical of President Donald Trump’s desire to establish a space force, which requires congressional authorization.
The funding reduction in the House bill could set up differences when the House Armed Services Committee considers the fiscal 2020 defense authorization bill next month.
House Armed Services Committee Chairman Adam Smith (D-Wash.) said in March he “cannot imagine that what the White House proposed is going to happen.”
