Sen. Warren Proposes Military Climate Change Legislation

May 16, 2019

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will introduce legislation to strengthen military installations against future climate change damage and require DOD to achieve net-zero emissions for all non-combat bases and infrastructure by 2030, Reuters reported Wednesday.
Warren, a member of the Armed Services Committee and a Democratic presidential candidate, released a summary of her plan that would require DOD to reach net-zero carbon emissions in just over 10 years and publish an annual report that would detail the climate vulnerability of installations at home and overseas.
“Climate change is real, it is worsening by the day, and it is undermining our military readiness,” Warren wrote in a Medium post about the bill.
Three installations have suffered billions in damage from severe weather events in the last year, including Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., Offutt Air Force Base, Neb., and Camp Lejeune, N.C.
On May 1 Tyndall halted all new hurricane repair work and Offutt officials have announced all flooding repair work will cease in early June unless Washington appropriates needed disaster recovery funding.
Repair funds have been delayed until Congress advances a disaster relief bill, as On Base has reported.
