Disaster Aid Package Signed for Distribution of Funds

June 9, 2019

President Donald Trump signed the long-delayed $19.1 billion aid package late Thursday that will deliver recovery funding to communities across the country still grappling with lingering damage from hurricanes, wildfires and flooding disasters.
The bill had been held up by partisan politics. Last week the House finally passed the bill after GOP lawmakers successfully blocked three attempts to approve the package by unanimous consent during the week-long Memorial Day recess, as Politico reported.
The Senate advanced the package before the congressional recess after it had been stalled for months due to party wrangling over a variety of contentious funding provisions in the bill.
It provides $2.7 billion in recovery funding to help military installations damaged by a series of natural disasters including hurricanes Florence and Michael that struck Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., and Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., last year. It also provides recovery funding for flooding this year at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.
