Senate to Move Forward with Hyten Joint Chiefs Vice Chair Confirmation Vote

September 24, 2019

The Senate will move forward with a confirmation vote this week on the nomination of Air Force Gen. John Hyten to become the next Joint Chiefs vice chairman, Military Times reported Tuesday.
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that by the end of the week “we’ll have confirmed our next vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs,” according to the report. A successful confirmation vote would end months of delay surrounding his promotion.
Hyten, currently the chief of the U.S. Strategic Command, was advanced by the Senate Armed Services Committee in July. His nomination, announced in April, has been delayed for months over allegations of sexual harassment and assault of a former aide.
Air Force officials have supported Hyten after an internal investigation turned up insufficient evidence for criminal charges, and released parts of their investigation, according to the report.
