The Army is able to spend an additional $1 billion on modernization and readiness, thanks to a focused effort on changing the way it buys goods and services, Federal News Network reported.
“We really have seen about a 9% savings from the actions we’ve taken,” said Roberta Weirick, who heads the services acquisition office for the deputy assistant Army secretary for procurement. “We believe category management will allow us to buy more with the same dollar.”
Category management refers to practices such as buying in bulk, consolidating contracts or negotiating prices.
The Air Force has also implemented aggressive procurement reforms to save money.
