House to Debate War Powers Bill Thursday

January 8, 2020

The House will consider legislation Thursday that would limit President Donald Trump’s power to take military action against Iran without congressional approval.
The resolution’s sponsor, Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), an Iraq war veteran, member of the Armed Services Committee and former DOD employee, said the resolution is about ensuring there is a “national conversation” about any potential escalation.
“I think it’s extremely important that we as a country, if we are going to either intentionally or accidentally slide into war, that we have a debate about that,” Slotkin said Wednesday night on CNN.
Sens. Mike Lee (R-Utah) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) were upset after an administration-led briefing Wednesday about the strike that killed an Iranian general.
“One of the messages we received from the briefers was, ‘Do not debate, do not discuss the issue of the appropriateness of further military intervention against Iran, and that if you do, you’ll be emboldening Iran,” Lee said, according to CQ. “I find this insulting and demeaning.”
