Senior Navy Leaders Say Racism, Sexism Review Will Lead to Changes

Navy leaders say a new task force looking into sexism and racism in the service will lead to significant changes that didn’t come about from previous reviews, Military.com reported.

“I think this is a different level of dialogue, both at senior levels and also all the way down to the deckplates,” said Vice Adm. John Nowell, the chief of naval personnel. “That’s what makes me hopeful. The bottom line is senior leadership is committed.”

The recently formed Task Force One Navy will review how the service handles recruiting, pre-accession mentoring and scholarship opportunities, talent management, training and education, detailing, fitness reports and evaluations, promotions, military justice, and health care.

The task force is expected to report initial findings by the end of this month with a final Navy report in December.

The Army was beginning its own broad review process to examine divisiveness in that branch, but the effort was effectively halted when President Trump weighed in against banning the confederate flag on installations and renaming Army bases named for confederate leaders, Defense One reported.
