DoD Basic Housing Allowance Rates to Increase an Average of 2.9% in 2021

December 16, 2020

The Department of Defense recently released its 2021 basic housing rates (BAH) which will take effect on January 1, 2021.

According to the DoD, the service will pay approximately one million service members $23 billion in the compensation package for the upcoming year. BAH rates vary by grade and dependency status and range from $70 to $158 monthly. Other factors that determine BAH include geographic duty location and pay grade.

“Median current market rent and average utilities (including electricity, heat, and water/sewer) comprise the total housing cost for each military housing area and are included in the Basic Allowance for Housing computation,” according to the DoD press release.
