Thousands of National Guard Troops to Remain in D.C. through March

January 26, 2021

Nearly 5,000 National Guardsmen will stay in Washington D.C. to protect the U.S. capitol following the buildup after the insurrection on Jan. 6, Air Force Magazine reports.

Requests by the U.S. Park Police, U.S. Secret Service, Capitol Police Department, and Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department for additional assistance from the National Guard was approved by Acting Army Secretary John E. Whitley on Jan. 25.

“We do not engage in that intelligence work ourselves, we rely on our federal partners, particularly the FBI, to provide that information,” said Whitley. “And so what I can tell you in terms of what they’re briefing us, there are several upcoming events, we don’t know what they are, over the next several weeks, and they’re concerned that there could be situations where there are lawful protests, First Amendment protected protests, that could either be used by malicious actors or other problems may emerge.”

National Guard presence ramped up to nearly 13,000 troops immediately after the insurrection, and peaked with 25,000 members stationed to protect the inauguration ceremony on Jan. 20.
