Space Force Launches Space Systems Command

April 8, 2021

Space Force officials announced a new restructuring plan Thursday that will transform the Space and Missile Systems Center in Los Angeles into Space Systems Command.

“SSC will be responsible for developing, acquiring, equipping, fielding and sustaining resilient space capabilities,” the Space Force said in a statement, which also includes an organizational chart.

Some Air Force units will be moved into Space Force, but the reorganization does not call for transfers from the other military services, as had once been suggested, C4ISRNET reported.

“Space Systems Command’s organizational structure was purpose-built to anticipate and be responsive to the challenges presented by a contested space domain,” Chief of Space Operations Gen. Jay Raymond said.

Space Force will build on the Air Force’s enterprise-centered approach to buying and contracting, for example. Space Command will also play a larger role in the Air Force Research Lab under a new partnership, Defense One noted.

The Space Force plans to stand up the restructured unit this summer.
