Housing Tenant Rights on Hold Again

June 7, 2021

Military service leaders have been promising that the remaining portions of the privatized housing tenant bill of rights would be in place this month. But Friday, DOD pushed it off to September.

“DOD expects all 18 tenant rights to be fully available at all installations with privatized housing by the end of fiscal 2021,” Military Times reported.

Of the 18 rights promised to tenants, only four have yet to be fully implemented: a process for resolving disputes, a process for withholding rent during dispute resolutions, a universal lease and a guarantee a tenant will see seven years of a home’s maintenance history.

“Through negotiation and lots of work with our privatized housing partners, nearly all of the housing companies have agreed to implement all 18 tenant rights at their existing privatized housing projects,” Paul Cramer, the acting assistant defense secretary for sustainment and chief housing officer, said in a statement.

Cramer said service members and military families living in privatized housing should check with their property manager or installation housing office to confirm which tenant rights have been implemented at their location.
