DOD Still Too Vulnerable to Fraud, GAO Report Says

September 21, 2021

Despite taking some steps to identify and root out fraud and waste, the Pentagon is still at risk of being frauded by contractors, a newly released Government Accountability Office report said.

DOD established a fraud reduction task force in fiscal year 2020, but last month GAO “found 11 of 59 DOD organizations hadn’t designated task force representatives. We also found DOD could more thoroughly assess and report department-wide fraud risks.”

The report’s authors recommended that the DOD comptroller establish clearer guidelines for identifying and reporting fraud, such as overbilling, hiding conflicts of interest and submitting falsified bids to manipulate the procurement.
