More than 40% of active duty troops of color say than have turned down assignments in certain communities over concerns of racism at the base or in the surrounding community, according to a new survey of more than 2,700 non-white members of the military or military families.
Blue Star Families’ “The Diverse Experiences of Military & Veteran Families of Color” survey was conducted along with the Syracuse University Institute for Veterans & Military Families and includes findings about health care, education, inclusion and other quality of life areas.
“Every organization, community, and individual which desires to support military and veteran families will be less effective if they fail to consider the unique experiences of military and veteran families of color in their efforts,” the report says.
