House Progressives Back Down from Request for Russia Negotiations

October 26, 2022

A group of House Democrats sought Tuesday to take back a request that President Biden negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire agreement in its war on Ukraine, Axios reported. The chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), and some other members said the text of the letter was outdated and was not supposed to be sent. The letter created what Politico described as a “Dem firestorm.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Tuesday that she will push for more Ukraine aid in the omnibus spending bill, as Defense News reported. It’s unclear if Pelosi would have the level of bipartisan support Ukraine aid has gotten in the past. House Republicans have put in doubt their willingness to support more military, humanitarian and economic aid without weighing in on how the money is spent.
