Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is the new leader of House Democrats, after a caucus vote Wednesday. He will be the first Black legislative leader of a U.S. major political party, as AP reported.
The caucus also elected Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.) as Democratic whip and Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) as caucus chair. Aguilar is currently a member of the defense appropriations subcommittee.
Clark issued a challenge and invitation for Republicans: “Our door is open for any member from across the aisle who wants to get to work for the American people.”
