Milcon-VA Subcommittee Approves Spending Bill

May 18, 2023

The House Appropriations subcommittee in charge of military construction and Veterans Affairs spending approved a $337.9 billion bill Wednesday without amendments and without a roll call vote. The bill added $1 billion to the administration’s request for veterans care, as On Base reported.

Action on the bill gives House Republicans a chance to signal their support for veterans as Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) continues high-stakes debt limit negotiations with the White House, countering Democratic talking points.

“We kept our promise… and we did it responsibly,” subcommittee chair John Carter (R-Texas) said.

Democrats argued that the bill underfunds military construction and the Toxic Exposures Fund.
